Vanguard

Vanguard is a client-owned investment company managing over $9 trillion for 50 million investors, building index funds, ETFs, personalized indexing and AI-driven trading platforms.

Vanguard is one of the world's largest investment companies, overseeing more than $9 trillion in assets for 50 million investors worldwide. Founded in 1975 and employing about 20,000 people, it operates across multiple global offices and offers 458 expertly managed funds spanning mutual funds and exchange-traded products. The firm's technical work covers AI-driven trading platforms, personalized indexing, index fund management, ETF development and hybrid advice services that combine digital and human guidance.

The firm's product history runs from the First Index Investment Trust, created in 1976 and now the Vanguard 500 Index Fund, which is credited with creating the index fund industry, to its first ETF in 2001 and more recent personalised indexing and AI-powered trading platforms. Its average expense ratio stands at 0.07%, against an industry average of 0.44%, a difference widely attributed to "The Vanguard Effect" of sustained fee pressure across the sector.

Vanguard operates under a client-owned mutual ownership model: it is owned by its funds, which are in turn owned by their investors. There are no outside owners taking profits, which the firm says allows exclusive focus on investor outcomes. Employees are known internally as "crew members". The structure follows the philosophy of founder John C. Bogle of aligning company interests directly with those of clients, and underpins a stated mission of treating investors fairly and helping them achieve long-term financial security.
